Rationale for Objective 6
To demonstrate my understanding and appreciation of the history of the social work profession in the context of contemporary social policy and practice and utilize my knowledge to inform practice, I have chosen Research Policy Brief #1 from SOCW 376 – Applied Research as an example.
Research Policy Brief #1 not only compares the relationship between elder abuse and care giving but it also addresses the fact that some elder abuse may actually be the result of the graduation of domestic violence into old age; therefore, social work assessments should no longer be limited to the care giver stress theory of over twenty years ago. A newer intervention plan is that of abuse-alert measure theory.
Social workers need to be aware of relationships between the care giver and the care recipient and the fact that abuse could have occurred in the past from either one that may be escalating into elder abuse at the present time. The social worker should also keep in mind that elder abuse is not limited to marital relationships; elder abuse occurring between parent and child may also involve past child abuse. Whatever the circumstances may be, support services may be extended to the care giver as well as the care recipient to help prevent old conflicts from reoccurring.
