Rationale for Objective #5
To fulfill learning objective #5 of understanding forms and mechanisms of oppression and discrimination and being able to apply innovative social change strategies which promote both social and economic justice, I have chosen a letter that I wrote to the editor of The Times/Free Press on October 2, 2007 concerning the much needed revision of the Federal Poverty Guidelines; the letter was published a few weeks later.
Since that time, the new 2008 Federal Poverty Guidelines have been issued by The State of Tennessee Department of Health. The new levels are for all 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia; this excludes Hawaii and Alaska. Unfortunately, the new figures are still not adequate enough to meet the basic needs of many households.
