Rationale for Objective #2
In April, 2007, I attended the 2007 Social Work Legislative Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, where I attended several continued education classes for personal growth and development. Resources available were sessions about economic human rights in social work, ethics and moral responsibility, policy issues, lobbying skills, and recovery treatments which can all be applied to my social work knowledge base.
One speaker that I especially enjoyed represented the Tennessee Coalition to Abolish State Killing. I really did not realize where I stood on the issue of capital punishment until the conference, so it definitely was a learning experience for me.
After attending the conference, I wrote a letter to the keynote speaker, Gary Bailey, MSW, ACSW-Chair, expressing sharing my positive experience at the conference; I also expressed a desire to see more conference sessions regarding the older adult population, especially since this population is increasing with the "graying" of the baby boomer generation and the shortage of social workers going into the geriatric field.
I chose to incorporate a book review assignment from SOCW 410, Social Work Policy and Practice. The assignment entailed the book One Nation, Underprivilaged written by M.R. Rank. The book discussed poverty in America and how it has lasting reprecussions on individuals who are trapped in the never-ending cycle of poverty and social discrimination. Another assignment that was chosen to describe objective #2 was a critical writing assignment for SOCW 376, Applied Research that discussed the disparities in healthcare in the state of Tennessee.
I have also included a supervisory agenda to this objective to demonstrate critical thinking.
